Dentures in New CarlisleDentures are secure, sturdy oral appliances that are placed in the mouth (sometimes permanently using implants as anchors) to replace natural teeth when they are missing or damaged. They are tailored to fit your mouth for an inconspicuous, natural-looking smile and a comfortable fit. With dentures, you can eat, talk and smile with confidence.

Are Dentures Right for You?

Do you want to restore an attractive smile that will also allow you to chew, speak and smile naturally? You may be a candidate for dentures if you:

  • Are missing the majority or all of your teeth due to decay, gum disease or other factors
  • Have teeth that are damaged or in bad condition
  • Have healthy gums

What Types of Dentures Are Available?

Depending on your dental needs, including the amount and location of your missing teeth, either full or partial dentures can be used to give you back your full, natural smile and the ability to eat your favorite foods with ease once more.

Full Dentures. When all of your natural teeth are missing and need replacement, full dentures are the perfect solution. These dentures are generally removable and include both upper and lower sets, each with a full row of replacement teeth. They may be permanently anchored in the mouth via dental implants.

Partial Dentures. When only a portion of your teeth is missing, either on your upper or lower jaw, partial dentures are used to fill in the gap. A partial denture can either be removable or fixed in the mouth by attaching to crowns placed on the adjacent natural teeth. A removable partial denture typically consists of a plastic base that matches your gums and has replacement teeth attached to it. This bridge fits comfortably and securely inside the mouth with a metal framework with clasps that attaches firmly to surrounding teeth.

How Are Dentures Placed?

Dentures, whether full or partial, are typically placed over a series of dental appointments. This allows our dental professionals to craft dentures that are made to fit your bite so that they fit comfortably and securely in your mouth while also looking as natural as possible. To do this, we will first make an impression of your mouth. For partial dentures, we will also match the size and color of your remaining teeth so that the replacement teeth on the partial denture blend in and look natural in your mouth.
For patients who have only a few natural teeth remaining (and especially in cases where the remaining teeth are in bad condition), the denture placement process may start with extraction of these teeth so that the patient can have full dentures. In these cases, the gums need time to heal (a process that can take weeks or even months) before dentures can be used.

While you are waiting for your permanent dentures (whether full or partial) to be made, we will provide you with immediate dentures to wear. Immediate dentures are temporary dentures that can be worn until your permanent dentures are created and, in cases that involve tooth extraction, when your gums are fully healed. The goal is for you to never go toothless.

Once your permanent dentures are ready, we will have you come into the office to check for a proper look and fit, and make any needed adjustments at that time.

Dentures FAQs

How Should I Take Care of My Dentures?

Restorative Dentistry in New CarlisleProper care of your dentures is crucial to maintaining their function and longevity. Rinse your dentures after every meal to remove food particles and other debris. Brush them daily with a soft-bristled brush and a non-abrasive cleaner specifically designed for dentures; regular toothpaste can be too harsh and scratch the surface. When not in use, store your dentures in room-temperature water or a denture-soaking solution to prevent them from drying out and losing their shape. Additionally, visit Dr. Miller regularly for check-ups to ensure your dentures fit correctly and to receive professional cleanings.

Can I Eat Normally with Dentures?

For the most part, the answer is yes. While dentures restore your ability to eat, it may take some time to adjust to them. Start with soft, easy-to-chew foods and cut your food into small pieces. As you become more accustomed to your dentures, you can gradually reintroduce harder and stickier foods. Be cautious with extremely hot or hard foods and avoid using your front teeth to bite directly into anything tough, as this can dislodge the dentures.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

With proper care, dentures typically last five to 10 years before they need to be replaced. Over time, dentures can wear down and lose their fit, especially as your mouth’s shape changes. Regular check-ups with Dr. Miller are important to adjust the fit and evaluate the condition of your dentures, ensuring they remain functional.

Are Dentures Uncomfortable or Painful?

Dental Appliances in New CarlisleInitially, new dentures may feel strange or uncomfortable as your mouth adjusts to wearing them. It is common to experience minor irritation or soreness and increased saliva flow. However, these issues should diminish as you get used to your dentures. If discomfort persists, consult with Dr. Miller as your dentures may need an adjustment. Properly fitted dentures should not cause ongoing pain or significant discomfort.

How Much Do Dentures Cost?

The cost of dentures depends on several factors, including the type of dentures you choose and whether additional dental procedures are needed before fitting them. While precise costs can vary, Dr. Miller’s office provides a range of denture options to suit different budgets and needs. Insurance may cover part of the cost of dentures, and for those without insurance or needing additional financial assistance, financing options are available to help manage the expense. Dr. Miller can provide a detailed estimate during your consultation.
