Dental Crown in New Carlisle, OH
Category: Dental Crown

At Team DDS New Carlisle, we understand that your smile is one of your most expressive features. Dental crowns are one of the key tools we use to restore and enhance the health and appearance of your teeth. A dental crown is a cap placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are often recommended when a tooth is weakened, aesthetically flawed, or after certain dental procedures.

But how do you know if you need a dental crown? In this blog, experienced dentist Dr. Lytha Miller explores some common signs that indicate a dental crown may be necessary.

Signs You Might Need a Dental Crown

  1. Extensive Decay: If a tooth has decay that is too extensive for a filling, a crown may be necessary to provide proper structure and prevent further damage.
  2. Broken or Worn Teeth: Teeth that are broken from grinding or accidents, or simply wear and tear over time, might need a crown to restore their function and aesthetic appearance.
  3. After a Root Canal: Following a root canal treatment, a crown is often placed over the treated tooth to protect it from future damage since the tooth is more fragile after this procedure.
  4. Cracked Tooth Syndrome: If you experience temperature sensitivity or pain when chewing, it might be due to a cracked tooth. A crown can help hold the tooth together and prevent further damage.
  5. To Improve Appearance: For teeth that are severely discolored, misshapen, or out of alignment, crowns can improve cosmetic appearance, contributing to a brighter, more uniform smile.

The Procedure

Getting a crown usually requires two visits to our office. During the first visit, Dr. Miller will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it for the crown. An impression will then be made to ensure the crown fits seamlessly with your bite. While your permanent crown is made, a temporary one will be placed to protect the tooth. At your second visit, the permanent crown will be adjusted if necessary and then cemented into place.
