Dentures in New Carlisle, OH
Dentures are secure, sturdy oral appliances that are placed in the mouth (sometimes permanently using implants as anchors) to replace natural teeth when they are missing or damaged. They are tailored to fit your mouth for an inconspicuous, natural-looking smile and a comfortable fit. With dentures, you can eat, talk and smile with confidence.
Are Dentures Right for You?
Do you want to restore an attractive smile that will also allow you to chew, speak and smile naturally? You may be a candidate for dentures if you:
- Are missing the majority or all of your teeth due to decay, gum disease or other factors
- Have teeth that are damaged or in bad condition
- Have healthy gums
What Types of Dentures Are Available?
Depending on your dental needs, including the amount and location of your missing teeth, either full or partial dentures can be used to give you back your full, natural smile and the ability to eat your favorite foods with ease once more.
Full Dentures. When all of your natural teeth are missing and need replacement, full dentures are the perfect solution. These dentures are generally removable and include both upper and lower sets, each with a full row of replacement teeth. They may be permanently anchored in the mouth via dental implants.
Partial Dentures. When only a portion of your teeth is missing, either on your upper or lower jaw, partial dentures are used to fill in the gap. A partial denture can either be removable or fixed in the mouth by attaching to crowns placed on the adjacent natural teeth. A removable partial denture typically consists of a plastic base that matches your gums and has replacement teeth attached to it. This bridge fits comfortably and securely inside the mouth with a metal framework with clasps that attaches firmly to surrounding teeth.
How Are Dentures Placed?
Dentures, whether full or partial, are typically placed over a series of dental appointments. This allows our dental professionals to craft dentures that are made to fit your bite so that they fit comfortably and securely in your mouth while also looking as natural as possible. To do this, we will first make an impression of your mouth. For partial dentures, we will also match the size and color of your remaining teeth so that the replacement teeth on the partial denture blend in and look natural in your mouth.
For patients who have only a few natural teeth remaining (and especially in cases where the remaining teeth are in bad condition), the denture placement process may start with extraction of these teeth so that the patient can have full dentures. In these cases, the gums need time to heal (a process that can take weeks or even months) before dentures can be used.
While you are waiting for your permanent dentures (whether full or partial) to be made, we will provide you with immediate dentures to wear. Immediate dentures are temporary dentures that can be worn until your permanent dentures are created and, in cases that involve tooth extraction, when your gums are fully healed. The goal is for you to never go toothless.
Once your permanent dentures are ready, we will have you come into the office to check for a proper look and fit, and make any needed adjustments at that time.
